Summit Lake Lodge was designed and hand built by Clarence and Esther Haas and their son William. The construction began in 1951 before the road to Anchorage had been completed and the doors opened for business in 1954. The logs and lumber were selected from the Chugach National Forest. The middle beams are spruce from the Hope area. These were hand hewn by Jack DeRanzo and originally measured 4 1/2 feet at the base.
The Lodge itself survived the great earthquake of 1964 with the exclusion of the exterior chimney on the fireplace. Buzz (William Haas) was in the bar at the time and recalled the huge beams rolling like they were fluid.
Summit Lake Lodge with its unsurpassed beauty has become a landmark for many over the years and we desire to continue that gift of hospitality and Alaskan spirit for many years to come. We hope that your travels to Alaska in the near future will include spending some time with us here at Summit Lake Lodge.
I was blown away with the beauty of Alaska. The scenery around Summit Lake Lodge is absolutely breath-taking - you could sit and watch it all day, if there wasn't so much else to do. Our hosts, Marty and June were so welcoming and helpful. They helped us arrange a float plane ride over glaciers, where we saw dall sheep, moose and various birds; and also a day cruise nearby. We enjoyed our summer trip so much we went back in winter a few years later, and are planning on returning to Summit Lake Lodge again. I recommend it to everyone!
